“Hey Bondhu Bidaye”(Farewell My Friend) – Extracts from ‘Shesher Kobita’ and participated by Soumitra Chatterjee on 2nd July’10 at Chowdiah!!

Hey Bondhu Bidaye (Farewell My Friend)

Hey Bondhu Bidaye’/ Farewell My Friend captures the intensely creative days through a musical. The script traverses in and out of Shesher Kobita and presents a fictional conversation between the poet and Rani. It not only explores the everlasting, ever youthful passion between Amit and Labonyo but also the passion of the poet who created them.

"Hey Bondhu Bidaye" (Farewell My Friend) in Progress

The script incorporates a dramatised conversation between Tagore and Rani Mahalanabis, extracts from ‘Shesher Kobita’ and modern poetry by several poets. This elevates it from being time or character specific and makes it universal and the passion timeless.Through the musical we reveal the completeness of love not in its consummation but in the yearning for it.

The Background

In 1928 Tagore’s journey to Oxford to deliver the Hibert Lecture was interrupted by illness. In order to rest and hasten recovery he stayed at Bangalore with the Professor of Philosophy Brajendranath Seal. During this period he wrote ‘Shesher Kobita’.
As if possessed by a creative frenzy he wrote all night on June the 25th and completed the masterpiece in the early hours of the morning.
During his travels, the poet was accompanied by Prasanta and Rani Mahalanabis to whom he read out ‘Shesher Kobita’ the following evening.
